Food and mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. Due to the possibility that Foot and Mouth Disease is either already in the country (but undetected) or does arrive, zoos in Australia are taking some precautionary measures to protect their vulnerable animals. If in the last 5 days, you have returned from Bali (or elsewhere in Indonesia) or been on a farm anywhere including Australia, can you PLEASE inform us and ensure that any footwear you have worn there is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before you arrive at Jamala or the grounds of the National Zoo and Aquarium.
There may be additional minor precautions introduced over time as is deemed necessary, particularly for guests who will be staying in the Giraffe Treehouses.
In the event that you don’t have the required cleaning materials, either don’t bring any shoes that could be affected or have them in a bag at the top of your suitcase and we will disinfect them for you. Let Reception know on your arrival but please do not wear them on arrival.
